58History
Maison Louis Jadot was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot — though the family's entanglement with Burgundy soil runs further back. They acquired the Beaune Premier Cru *Clos des Ursules* in 1826, a full generation before the house formally existed. That vineyard remains in the portfolio today, a continuous thread from the pre-négociant era to the present.
For most of its history, Jadot was a family operation. In 1985 it passed to the American importer Kobrand, which had distributed Jadot's wines in the United States for decades. The transition proved orderly — the house kept its Beaune headquarters, its staff, and its identity as a serious Burgundy producer rather than an export vehicle.
Winemaking Approach
Jadot operates at scale across both the domaine and négociant models, producing wines from its own (approximately 270 ha of) vineyards and from purchased grapes — making it one of the largest single operations in Burgundy.
The house's winemaking direction for four decades was set by Jacques Lardière, head winemaker from 1970 to 2011. Lardière built a reputation for high-temperature fermentations that pushed red wines toward extended ageing potential — a style often called muscular without being coarse. Frédéric Barnier succeeded him in 2012 and has maintained continuity with the house style while steering the estate's viticulture toward organic certification.
One unusual footnote: in 1996, Jadot partnered with Tonnellerie Vicard to establish Cadus, its own cooperage producing French oak barrels in traditional Burgundian style. Very few Burgundy houses manufacture their own barrels.
