Chevalier-Montrachet borrows its name from the same medieval legend that named Bâtard-Montrachet — the eldest son of the Lord of Puligny, *le chevalier*, the knight. The AOC dates to 1937. The vineyard sits entirely within Puligny-Montrachet and holds the highest position among the five "Montrachet" grands crus arrayed along the hill.
Style & Terroir
Chevalier-Montrachet covers 7.47 ha of production area (2008). Placed directly above Le Montrachet on the upper slope of the Puligny-Montrachet hill, it has remarkably thin topsoil — limestone bedrock lies just below the surface. Those poor, rocky soils drive the vineyard's defining character: linear, mineral, built for vertical reach rather than broadside richness.
Only Chardonnay is permitted here. Notably, even the 15% Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris accessory allowance accepted elsewhere in Puligny is disallowed. Minimum potential alcohol stands at 12.0%; yield ceiling at 40 hl/ha. Annual production runs to roughly 41,000 bottles.
Where Bâtard-Montrachet expands outward in richness, Chevalier drives upward with tension and precision. Its signature is clarity, structural frame, and a minerality that coils rather than sprawls — a wine that rewards patience. Body is lighter than Le Montrachet's, but the architecture rivals it, and the aging potential is exceptional.
Notable Producers
Domaine Leflaive holds the largest and most consequential parcels in Chevalier-Montrachet. Its biodynamic, precision-driven approach has become the benchmark against which other bottlings are measured.
Maison Louis Jadot owns a historic parcel within *Les Demoiselles*, producing the estate's white-wine flagship. Maison Louis Latour also holds a substantial piece of *Les Demoiselles* — the cornerstone of Latour's white-wine portfolio.
Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils is among the largest single owners, with the distinctive *La Cabotte* parcel. Domaine Michel Niellon, a Chassagne family estate, contributes a smaller but carefully tended holding. Maison Joseph Drouhin rounds out the picture with a refined, elegantly structured bottling.
