Mazis-Chambertin received its AOC designation in 1937. It sits immediately above the Route des Grands Crus, closer to the village of Gevrey-Chambertin than most of the other grands crus along that corridor. The vineyard divides naturally into two sections: *Mazis-Haut* (upper) and *Mazis-Bas* (lower) — the upper portion delivering greater structure and aromatic complexity, the lower tending toward earlier accessibility. That internal geography has long shaped how growers think about the site.
Style & Terroir
Mazis-Chambertin covers 8.79 ha (2008 declaration). It borders Chambertin-Clos de Bèze to the south and Ruchottes-Chambertin to the west — proximity to Clos de Bèze pulling the style toward power and cellar-worthiness. Pinot Noir is the sole variety planted; the 15% accessory grape allowance permitted by the AOC goes unused.
Minimum planting density is 9,000 vines per hectare, minimum maturity 11.5% potential alcohol, yield ceiling 37 hl/ha. Annual production runs approximately 36,000 bottles (2008).
Where Chambertin and Clos de Bèze command their trophy prices, Mazis often tracks a step behind on the secondary market — punching at comparable depth while carrying less name recognition. For collectors willing to look past the top two, it can be the more interesting purchase.
