ジュヴレ・シャンベルタンの特級群で北端に位置するマジ・シャンベルタンは、9.10ヘクタールの面積を擁する。畑は上下二つの区画に分かれ、クロ・ド・ベーズと同じ岩盤上のマジ・オーは表土が薄く、より優れた性質を持つとされる。一方、マジ・バは土壌が深く、ラヴォーの谷から届く冷涼な風と堆積土の影響を受ける。ワインは力強い構造と野性味を帯び、タンニンやレザー、リコリスなどの複雑な香りが特徴だ。オスピス・ド・ボーヌが1.75ヘクタールを所有するほか、フェヴレーやアルマン・ルソーらが名を連ねる。熟成には時間を要するが、シャルムとは対極にある厳格で深みのある個性を備えている。

History

Mazis-Chambertin received its AOC designation in 1937. It sits immediately above the Route des Grands Crus, closer to the village of Gevrey-Chambertin than most of the other grands crus along that corridor. The vineyard divides naturally into two sections: *Mazis-Haut* (upper) and *Mazis-Bas* (lower) — the upper portion delivering greater structure and aromatic complexity, the lower tending toward earlier accessibility. That internal geography has long shaped how growers think about the site.

Style & Terroir

Mazis-Chambertin covers 8.79 ha (2008 declaration). It borders Chambertin-Clos de Bèze to the south and Ruchottes-Chambertin to the west — proximity to Clos de Bèze pulling the style toward power and cellar-worthiness. Pinot Noir is the sole variety planted; the 15% accessory grape allowance permitted by the AOC goes unused.

Minimum planting density is 9,000 vines per hectare, minimum maturity 11.5% potential alcohol, yield ceiling 37 hl/ha. Annual production runs approximately 36,000 bottles (2008).

Where Chambertin and Clos de Bèze command their trophy prices, Mazis often tracks a step behind on the secondary market — punching at comparable depth while carrying less name recognition. For collectors willing to look past the top two, it can be the more interesting purchase.

Notable Producers

Hospices de Beaune holds a parcel that appears each November under the auction cuvée *Madame Collignon* — one of the sale's most anticipated lots.

Domaine Maume, for decades a leading family owner in Gevrey, is now part of the Marchand-Tawse portfolio.

Domaine Faiveley works a significant parcel, giving the négociant house one of its stronger Gevrey grand cru positions.
