History

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is one of five grand cru vineyards in the Montrachet complex. Unlike Bâtard-Montrachet or Le Montrachet itself — which straddle Puligny and Chassagne — Bienvenues lies entirely within the commune of Puligny-Montrachet. The origin of the "Bienvenues" ("welcome") prefix is uncertain; the site was historically carved out of the broader Bâtard-Montrachet appellation. AOC status was established in 1937.

Style & Terroir

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet covers 3.53 ha of production area (2008), making it among the smaller Montrachet grands crus. It borders Bâtard on its western and southern edges — a compact "younger sibling" to that vineyard. Crucially, its confinement to Puligny-Montrachet is a meaningful distinction: the wine takes on the purer, more tensile Puligny character rather than the broader, Chassagne-influenced weight found in Bâtard.

Only Chardonnay is permitted. Yield ceiling is 40 hl/ha, with a minimum maturity of 11.5% potential alcohol. Annual production runs to approximately 146 hl, or around 20,000 bottles.

Stylistically, Bienvenues tends to be less overtly rich than Bâtard but more precise and finely drawn — positioned between Bâtard and Chevalier, with the mineral clarity and transparency that defines Puligny at its best.

Notable Producers

Domaine Leflaive holds the most important share of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Its biodynamic, precision-driven approach makes this one of the benchmark versions.

Domaine Paul Pernot is a Puligny family estate with significant holdings here.

Domaine Carillon — now divided between Jacques Carillon and François Carillon — is a traditional Puligny house with a parcel in the vineyard.

Domaine Pierre Morey, based in Meursault but farming several Puligny parcels, also produces Bienvenues.

Maison Louis Jadot and Maison Joseph Drouhin both hold parcels. Because the vineyard is small and total production tightly limited, the Leflaive version in particular ranks among the most sought-after white Burgundies on the international market.
