History

Bouchard Père & Fils traces its origins to 1731, when Michel Bouchard established the firm as a cloth merchant. His son Joseph shifted the business decisively toward wine, buying and selling vineyards from 1746 onward, and the house took its current name in 1785.

The headquarters sits inside the historic Château de Beaune — a fifteenth-century former royal fortress whose medieval cellars still serve as the main ageing space. That address has anchored the house's identity for more than two centuries.

In 1995 the Bouchard family sold to Joseph Henriot, a Champagne producer, whose ownership triggered a significant quality reinvestment programme. Then in 2022 the Henriot family sold to the Artémis Domaines group controlled by François Pinault, which also owns Château Latour, Clos de Tart, and Domaine des Lambrays.

Winemaking Approach

Bouchard Père & Fils operates simultaneously as a grower and a négociant — an uncommon combination at this scale in Burgundy. The estate produces wines from its own extensive vineyards and from purchased grapes, running both channels in parallel.

The Henriot acquisition in 1995 drove real improvements: new production facilities, stronger vineyard management, and a revitalised team. The reputation that followed was earned rather than inherited. Crucially, the house is one of the largest white-wine producers in the Côte de Beaune, with particular depth across the Beaune and Meursault premiers crus.
