History

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest of the five grands crus in the Montrachet complex — and the only one that lies entirely within Chassagne-Montrachet. It was the last of the five to be demarcated as an independent appellation, carved out from the broader Bâtard-Montrachet area. The AOC was established in 1937. The etymology of "Criots" remains unclear; no satisfactory derivation has been settled.

That geographical specificity matters. The other Montrachet grands crus straddle two communes or sit in Puligny. Criots belongs entirely to Chassagne — a reminder that this village's white-wine identity is older, and more complex, than its red-wine tradition sometimes suggests.

Style & Terroir

At 1.57 ha (2008 figure), Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is one of the smallest grands crus in all of Burgundy. It borders Bâtard-Montrachet to the north. Only Chardonnay is permitted, and yields are capped at 40 hl/ha with minimum potential alcohol of 11.5%. Annual production runs to roughly 73 hl — around 10,000 bottles — extremely limited even by grand cru standards.

The wines express the Chassagne side of the Montrachet complex: the richness and depth of Bâtard, but with a slightly more refined mineral texture and finer grain. Because the vineyard is so small and nearly all its owners are Chassagne houses, Criots occupies a specialist corner of the white Burgundy market — sought by collectors who already know the address, largely invisible to those who don't.

Notable Producers

Domaine Joseph Belland is a Chassagne-Montrachet family estate and holds one of the principal parcels here.

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, another leading Chassagne house, works a parcel in the *climat*.

Domaine Roger Belland is also Chassagne-based and produces from a holding here.

Domaine d'Auvenay — Lalou Bize-Leroy's personal estate — produces a minuscule biodynamic Criots that ranks among the rarest wines in Burgundy. Production is so small that the wine seldom appears outside auction.

Domaine Blain-Gagnard rounds out the Chassagne family estates with a parcel here.

The concentration of Chassagne-based owners makes Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet effectively a local affair. For outside buyers, it is among the hardest of the Montrachet grands crus to source.
