Clos de la Roche sits at the northern edge of Morey-Saint-Denis, directly bordering Gevrey-Chambertin. Its AOC dates to 1936, and the *Clos* element of the name recalls the stone wall that once enclosed the vineyard. It is the northernmost grand cru of Morey-Saint-Denis and has occupied the upper tier of the village's hierarchy for centuries.
Style & Terroir
At 13.41 ha (2008 production area), Clos de la Roche is the largest of Morey-Saint-Denis's four grands crus. It lies along the Route des Grands Crus, bordered by Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and Clos Saint-Denis to the south.
Pinot Noir fills the vineyard in practice; the regulatory 15% allowance for Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Gris is effectively never exercised. The yield ceiling is 35 hl/ha, minimum maturity 11.5% potential alcohol, and annual production runs to approximately 59,700 bottles (2008).
The proximity to Gevrey-Chambertin pulls the wine toward density and a firm tannic structure — the most powerful of the Morey grands crus — while the village character keeps a perfumed, fine-boned edge. These are wines built for long ageing, with one of the strongest cellaring curves in the appellation.
Notable Producers
Domaine Ponsot holds around 3 of the original 4 ha of the historical *clos* and has long set the reference for the vineyard — a classic, age-focused style that rewards patience.
Domaine Dujac, based in Morey-Saint-Denis, brings a different sensibility: high whole-cluster fermentation and a more aromatic, luminous profile. The two estates represent contrasting philosophies within the same *climat*.
Domaine Leroy farms biodynamically at very low yields, producing a concentrated, intensely mineral expression.
Domaine Armand Rousseau holds parcels just across the commune boundary — its only grand cru outside Gevrey-Chambertin — adding the house's characteristic precision to the ownership roster.
Additional Morey-Saint-Denis producers round out the holdings, each contributing a distinct reading of this varied and powerful site.
