History

Maison Joseph Drouhin was founded in 1880 in Beaune by a 23-year-old Joseph Drouhin. His son Maurice Drouhin took over in the early twentieth century and made the purchase that would define the house: the Beaune 1er Cru *Clos des Mouches*, still the estate's symbolic vineyard.

From the 1960s, Maurice's son-in-law Robert Drouhin led the maison and expanded the portfolio across Burgundy. He also looked west — in 1987 the family founded Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the Dundee Hills AVA, now a benchmark for Pinot Noir in the Pacific Northwest. Today the Burgundy house and its Oregon counterpart are run by Joseph Drouhin's great-grandchildren. Robert's daughter Véronique Drouhin-Boss serves as head winemaker for both estates.

Winemaking Approach

Drouhin converted all estate-owned vineyards to certified organic farming by the 2009 vintage, having experimented with biodynamics since the early 1990s. Négociant operations remain integral to the business: alongside domaine-grown fruit, the house purchases grapes from contract growers across Burgundy, releasing more than 90 different cuvées in total.

The house style leans toward restraint — measured oak, careful extraction, and transparency that lets each terroir speak without a heavy winemaker's signature.
