History

Grands Échezeaux is a grand cru in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, classified as an AOC in 1936 — a year before its larger neighbour Échezeaux received its own appellation. The vineyard sits directly north and east of the stone walls of Clos de Vougeot, a position that shaped its reputation from an early date. Though administratively part of Flagey-Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux has always occupied a distinct identity: smaller, more tightly held, and reputationally above the broader Échezeaux.

Style & Terroir

Grands Échezeaux covers 7.53 ha of production area — significantly smaller than the neighbouring Échezeaux. Its eastern and northern edges abut the Clos de Vougeot wall, with Échezeaux lying to the west and south. Regulations mirror those of the Vosne-Romanée grands crus: Pinot Noir dominant, 9,000 vines per hectare minimum, 11.5% minimum potential alcohol, yield ceiling at 35 hl/ha.

In the early 2000s only 21 owners worked the vineyard, compared with roughly 80 in Échezeaux — and that concentrated ownership contributes to more consistent quality across bottlings. Total production in 2008 ran to about 240 hl, or approximately 32,000 bottles. The wine tends toward a powerful frame with long ageing potential, generally more generous in volume than Romanée-Conti or La Tâche while remaining more focused than most of Échezeaux.

Notable Producers

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds around 3.5 ha — close to half of the entire vineyard — and has long set the benchmark for the cru. Farmed under the same DRC protocols applied across its other grands crus, the wine is typically the most accessible of the DRC range in terms of production volume, though no easier to obtain.

Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, based in Flagey-Échezeaux, is a key producer alongside DRC.

Maison Joseph Drouhin holds one of the more consistent négociant parcels in the cru.

With only a handful of houses working Grands Échezeaux, the appellation is harder to find than most Vosne-Romanée grands crus — but buyers are rewarded with more reliable quality than its larger sibling next door.
