Échezeaux received its AOC designation in 1937 — one year after the Vosne-Romanée grands crus that share its slope. The vineyard assembled over time from a series of small lieux-dits on the gentle hillside where Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, and Chambolle-Musigny converge. Its unusual situation — grand cru in name, administratively attached to the small village of Flagey-Échezeaux — means it has long occupied a slightly ambiguous position in the Côte de Nuits hierarchy. During the second half of the twentieth century, the sheer number of owners and the breadth of the site reinforced a pattern where producer identity matters more than the appellation label alone.
Style & Terroir
Échezeaux is the largest of the grands crus clustered around Vosne-Romanée, covering 34.79 ha (2008 figure). The cru runs as a long strip touching the boundaries of three communes, and its eleven internal *climats* differ in elevation, aspect, and soil composition — which goes a long way toward explaining the quality range from bottle to bottle.
Pinot Noir dominates. Regulations technically permit up to 15% combined Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Gris, but in practice these white varieties go unused. Minimum planting density is 9,000 vines per hectare, minimum maturity 11.5% potential alcohol, and the yield ceiling 35 hl/ha. Total production in 2008 ran to roughly 1,240 hl — around 165,000 bottles. With nearly eighty owners working the vineyard, the range between a careful, low-yielding domaine and a less attentive one can be striking. The finest parcels, harvested by producers who treat Échezeaux with the same rigor they apply to Grands Échezeaux or Romanée-St-Vivant, produce wines of real finesse and depth.
Notable Producers
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds a parcel farmed to the same exacting standard as the rest of the DRC portfolio.
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget continues the Échezeaux holdings built by Henri Jayer, whose influence on the cru's modern reputation was substantial.
Domaine Jean Grivot brings a traditional Vosne-Romanée house sensibility to its well-established parcel.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, based in Flagey-Échezeaux itself, holds significant area in both Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux — the most local of the major owners. With close to eighty proprietors in total, the cru rewards careful label-reading above almost any other grand cru in Burgundy.
