History

Les Santenots du Milieu is one of Burgundy's more curious administrative anomalies. The vineyard sits inside the commune of Meursault, but an AOC rule lets its red wine carry the label "Volnay 1er Cru Santenots" — while white wine from the same parcel is sold as Meursault 1er Cru. Red-as-Volnay, white-as-Meursault: a codification of practice already well established before the AOCs took their formal shape in 1937.

"Du Milieu" marks the central and best-regarded portion of the broader Santenots area, distinct from the Dessous and Dessus sections to either side. It is also, in practical terms, the personal terrain of Domaine des Comtes Lafon — a near-monopole that has shaped how the world understands this parcel.

Style & Terroir

The broader Santenots area spans roughly 30 ha; the "du Milieu" parcel at the heart of it covers approximately 3.8 ha, held almost entirely by the Lafon family. The soil bridges Meursault's limestone and Volnay's leaner red clay, tilting the character toward red wine.

Pinot Noir when bottled as "Volnay-Santenots" red; Chardonnay when bottled as Meursault 1er Cru white. In Les Santenots du Milieu specifically, the tradition runs overwhelmingly red. The wine combines Volnay's structural elegance with Meursault's broader frame — an unusual balance that rewards patience. Ageing potential is substantial.

Notable Producers

Domaine des Comtes Lafon holds virtually the entire climat. This is Lafon's principal red-wine cuvée — and Dominique Lafon's interpretation has earned a reputation that reaches well beyond the typical audience for a domaine otherwise associated with white Burgundy.

Domaine Matrot — a Meursault family estate with parcels in the broader Santenots area.

Bouchard Père & Fils — the major négoce house holds parcels across the Santenots cluster.

Domaine Jacques Prieur — long-standing holdings in Santenots.
