At roughly 31 hectares, Les Grèves is the largest premier cru in Beaune — and the name explains itself: *grève* is old French for gravel, pointing directly to the well-drained, limestone-shot soils that run across the mid-slope band.
A section within the vineyard carries a more arresting name: "Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus" ("Vineyard of the Baby Jesus"). The parcel once belonged to the Carmelite nuns of Beaune, and tradition holds that when the nuns learned Queen Anne of Austria — mother of Louis XIV — had conceived, they declared that a child Jesus had been given to them. That exclamation, retold across generations, became the name. Today the parcel is held as a single-owner bottling by Maison Bouchard Père & Fils, and it stands as one of the most symbolically charged wines in the Beaune négoce.
Style & Terroir
Les Grèves occupies the prime mid-slope of Beaune, planted mostly to Pinot Noir with a small complement of Chardonnay. Among the Beaune premiers crus, red Les Grèves is the most structured — concentrated red fruit, a mineral thread that runs through the wine, and firm tannins built for a decade or more in the cellar. The Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus bottling demands patience; in strong vintages it can hold for twenty to thirty years.
Wines are made under the standard Burgundy premier cru framework.
Notable Producers

Maison Joseph Drouhin holds one of the principal parcels in the vineyard.
Maison Louis Jadot maintains holdings here alongside its wider Beaune portfolio.
Maison Albert Morot is a traditional Beaune family estate with tenure in Les Grèves.
