Les Folatières occupies the upper slope of Puligny-Montrachet, climbing toward the border with Saint-Aubin at an elevation that pushes the character of the wine toward tension rather than opulence. The name — from an old French word for frolic or play — sits oddly against the site's austere limestone soils, though the wines themselves are anything but austere once they open. Puligny carries four grands crus, and Folatières is routinely placed among the premiers crus most worth cellaring.
Les Folatières produces white wine from Chardonnay. At approximately 14.94 ha it is among the larger premier cru *climats* in Puligny — 28 producers hold registered parcels, making consistent quality uneven but raising the ceiling considerably when skilled hands are at work. The altitude and thin topsoil over hard limestone tend to produce wines with laser-like acidity, restrained oak integration, and a mineral finish that outlasts the fruit in the glass.
