History

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is the Meursault reference — white Burgundy's most closely watched address, and a domaine whose modern history is inseparable from one person. The estate's holdings were assembled through family marriages in the early twentieth century, drawing together multiple outstanding parcels under the Lafon name. For much of that century, however, most of the wine went straight to négociants rather than being bottled at the domaine.

Dominique Lafon changed that in the mid-1980s when he took over management. He progressively reclaimed production, and by the 1990s every wine was estate-bottled. Simultaneously, he converted the vineyards to biodynamic viticulture — a process completed across every parcel by around 1998. The domaine is now run by Dominique alongside the next generation of the family.

Winemaking Approach

Lafon's approach is precise and quiet. Biodynamic farming applies throughout. Yields are kept low through strict canopy management and rigorous sorting at harvest. The house departed from the heavy *bâtonnage* that characterised Meursault in the 1990s, shifting toward a more reductive, oxygen-cautious style that sharpened definition. New oak now runs at roughly 20–30%, down from earlier levels, letting the vineyard sites speak without cosmetic overlay.

The estate also makes red wines, and its Volnay holdings are substantial enough to form a serious red portfolio alongside the white majority.
