Clos des Mouches sits in the southern end of Beaune, close to the boundary with Pommard — geographically one of the most prized positions in the village. The name has nothing to do with flies: "mouches" here means bees, a reference to hives historically kept in the area.
In 1921, Maurice Drouhin began acquiring parcels. Over the following century Maison Joseph Drouhin built up one of the largest holdings in the vineyard, and Clos des Mouches became the house's standard-bearer — the wine the Drouhin name is attached to around the world.
Style & Terroir
Clos des Mouches covers approximately 25 hectares, large for a premier cru, with varying exposures and elevations across the slope. Both red and white wines are made here — an unusual combination for Beaune, where white production is the exception rather than the rule.
Reds come from Pinot Noir; whites from Chardonnay. All wines fall under Burgundy's premier cru framework: minimum 9,000 vines per hectare, yields up to 45–48 hl/ha.
The reds sit at the structured end of the Beaune spectrum, with a development curve of ten to twenty years in good vintages. The whites express a distinct Beaune character — generous and fruit-forward, anchored by a firm mineral frame — rather than the tighter precision found in the great whites of Puligny or Chassagne.
Notable Producers
Maison Joseph Drouhin is the largest owner and the producer most closely identified with this vineyard worldwide. Drouhin makes both a red and a white — the white in particular among the signature cuvées of the entire house portfolio.
Maison Chanson Père & Fils holds a historical stake as a leading Beaune négociant.
Maison Albert Morot is a traditional Beaune family estate with parcels in the vineyard.
Maison Bouchard Père & Fils includes Clos des Mouches parcels within its extensive Beaune premier cru portfolio.
Other Beaune estates hold smaller plots. Beaune has no grand cru designation, and Clos des Mouches functions as the village's de facto flagship — the wine most directly associated with the appellation's reputation.
