Montagny Premier Cru is an exclusively white-wine appellation at the southern end of the Côte Chalonnaise, just north of the Mâconnais. The rules here set Montagny apart from its neighbors: any *climat* within the appellation may carry the premier cru designation, provided it reaches the required minimum natural alcohol. The result is an unusually high proportion of premier cru wines relative to village wine — a quirk that makes the label less hierarchically meaningful than premier cru status elsewhere.
Chardonnay, white only. Premier cru regulations apply: minimum 9,000 vines per hectare, potential alcohol around 11.5%, yields capped in the 45–48 hl/ha range.
