Profile

History

Domaine Ramonet was founded in 1930 by Pierre Ramonet in Chassagne-Montrachet. Pierre had arrived in Burgundy in the late 1920s with almost nothing — he made his living buying grapes and vinifying them himself. Land prices were low, and through sheer persistence he assembled a portfolio of vineyard parcels that still forms the core of the estate today.

His first purchase was Les Grandes Ruchottes in 1934. He continued acquiring grands crus and top premiers crus after the Second World War, building the estate parcel by parcel.

Pierre eventually passed the domaine to his son André Ramonet, who died in 2011. It is now run by Pierre's grandsons Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, who have worked the family vineyards since 1984. The estate remains entirely family-owned — a through-line from one man with a knapsack to four generations of Chassagne winemaking.

Winemaking Approach

Ramonet's house style rests on restraint. New oak is used sparingly; the goal is to let the vineyard speak rather than the barrel. Severe pruning and sorting keep yields low at every level — grand cru and village wine alike.

The whites need time. Village and premier cru wines typically peak after ten to twenty years; the grands crus reward cellaring of twenty to thirty years or longer. Collectors follow individual vintages closely, but the long-ageing orientation holds across the range. The estate produces around 24 different appellation wines annually from approximately 16 ha.
