Les Pucelles is a premier cru in Puligny-Montrachet — and its name is inseparable from the medieval legend behind three of the Montrachet vineyards. The story holds that the Lord of Puligny divided his land among his children: the eldest son received the knight's share (*le chevalier* → Chevalier-Montrachet), the daughters received the maidens' share (*les pucelles* → Les Pucelles), and the illegitimate son received the bastard's share (*le bâtard* → Bâtard-Montrachet).
That genealogy places Les Pucelles in direct company with two grands crus — and the vineyard has long been treated, commercially and critically, as a step above the rest of Puligny's premier cru tier.
At the 1976 "Judgment of Paris" blind tasting, Domaine Leflaive's Les Pucelles placed eighth overall among white Burgundies, a result that fixed the vineyard's international reputation firmly in place.
Style & Terroir
Les Pucelles lies directly north of Bâtard-Montrachet and is physically continuous with that grand cru. The site sits at the southern edge of Puligny-Montrachet, just below the grand cru hill, with only Chardonnay planted.
The style combines the vertical mineral drive associated with Chevalier-Montrachet and the body associated with Bâtard-Montrachet — structured around Puligny's defining transparency and tension. Ageing capacity is exceptional; the best bottles reward patience across two decades or more.
Notable Producers
Domaine Leflaive is the principal owner and the source of the 1976 Judgment of Paris bottling. The estate farms biodynamically, and its Les Pucelles is a reference for the vineyard.
Domaine Jacques Prieur, based in Meursault, holds significant parcels here alongside its grand cru holdings.
Maison Louis Jadot owns a parcel and bottles it under its domaine label.
Domaine Jean Chartron (Château de Puligny-Montrachet) is one of the core family estates of the commune.
Domaine Paul Pernot is a traditional Puligny-Montrachet family producer with a holding here.
