Domaine Roulot
Profile

History
Domaine Roulot is a family estate in Meursault and a central reference point for white Burgundy. Guy Roulot organised the modern domaine in the 1930s, and the family has remained in charge ever since.
His son Jean-Marc Roulot took an unusual double path in the late twentieth century — pursuing a career as a French actor while learning the vines. He joined the domaine full-time in 1989. Under his direction the estate rose steadily through the 1990s and 2000s, eventually taking its place beside Coche-Dury, Comtes Lafon, and Leflaive as one of the modern reference houses of Meursault.
Winemaking Approach
Roulot and Coche-Dury together define what critics call the "reductive" school of modern Meursault — a style built on precision, mineral tension, and restraint rather than richness or weight.
- Lutte raisonnée / organic methods: the estate farms organically in practice, with no formal certification. - Earlier bottling: Roulot moves wines to bottle on a slightly earlier schedule than many Meursault houses, preserving freshness and acidity. - **Restrained *bâtonnage*: heavy lees stirring — common in 1990s Meursault — has given way to minimal contact, sharpening the estate's characteristically linear profile. - Moderate new oak: around 20–30%, favouring the flinty, reductive "matchstick" character that marks the house style. - Parcel-by-parcel vinification**: Roulot vinifies multiple village-level plots separately, releasing each as its own named cuvée — an approach that has become something of a signature practice.
The wines show tight mineral precision and bright acidity from the start, with none of the heaviness sometimes associated with Meursault. The house style is finely drawn and strikingly linear.
