Domaine Georges Roumier traces its origin to 1924, when Georges Roumier married into the Quanquin family — a long-established Chambolle-Musigny family already holding several prestigious parcels. Georges assumed management of those vineyards and gradually built them into a domain-bottling operation.
Through the twentieth century the estate grew in both scale and reputation, establishing itself as the defining family address of Chambolle-Musigny. Christian Roumier, Georges's grandson, took over as head winemaker in the early 1990s. The international standing the domaine now holds is largely a product of his tenure.
Winemaking Approach
Christian Roumier's house style is spare, transparent, and unmistakably Chambolle — fine-grained tannins, lifted aromatics, and a restraint that rewards patience in the cellar.
- Restrained new oak: oak percentages stay low enough that barrel character never dominates. - Gentle extraction: each parcel is handled to expose its own texture and fragrance rather than a single imposed profile. - Lutte raisonnée: not certified organic, but chemical use is minimised throughout the vineyards. - Long ageing potential: the finest cuvées are built for ten to twenty years, with exceptional vintages well beyond.
The wines are sometimes described as "the house that defines Chambolle" — a phrase earned through decades of consistent precision rather than bold intervention.
