Bougros occupies the northwestern corner of the seven Chablis Grand Cru *climats* — the first in the lineup as it runs from northwest to southeast along the single hillside north of the village. The Chablis AOC and its seven grands crus were recognised in 1938. Like its neighbours, Bougros shares the Cistercian heritage of the hill, which medieval monks cultivated long before appellation law gave it a name.
Style & Terroir
The vineyard sits at the northwestern end of the grand cru slope, sharing the same southwest-facing aspect and the Kimmeridgean limestone, clay, and oyster-shell soils that define all seven *climats*. Elevations range between 150 and 200 metres. Its position at the corner does give Bougros slightly different exposure to sun and wind than the *climats* further along the hill — a subtle but real distinction.
Chardonnay is the sole variety. Grand cru regulations require a minimum of 11.0% potential alcohol and permit yields up to 54 hl/ha.
Bougros is often described as the least expressive of the seven grands crus, and there is some truth to that. It lacks the structural depth of Les Clos or the aromatic intensity of Vaudésir. That said, it delivers vibrant fruit, clean acidity, and the saline minerality that marks authentic Chablis — and it drinks well in its middle age, roughly five to fifteen years from vintage, without demanding the extended cellaring that Les Clos requires.
Notable Producers
Domaine William Fèvre is the dominant owner. Notably, Fèvre bottles a special cuvée from the steepest lower section — labelled "Côte Bouguerots" — and as one of the largest Chablis estates its Bougros sets the stylistic reference for the vineyard.
La Chablisienne, the Chablis cooperative, holds a significant parcel.
Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard, a major Chablis family estate, works a parcel here.
Domaine Servin, a traditional Chablis house, farms Bougros alongside several other grands crus.
Drouhin-Vaudon (the Chablis arm of Joseph Drouhin) also holds parcels in Bougros.
