Les Grands Épenots and Les Rugiens are the twin poles of Pommard's premier cru hierarchy. Historically the name "Les Épenots" covered a larger block on the northern side of the village, later divided into the grand and petit sections that carry the appellation today.
The most significant single feature inside Les Grands Épenots is the Clos des Épeneaux — a 5.23 ha walled monopole held without interruption by the Comte Armand family since 1828. That unbroken chain of family ownership across nearly two centuries makes it one of the longest-held single-family premier cru monopoles in Burgundy.
Style & Terroir
Les Grands Épenots sits on Pommard's northern flank, close to the Beaune boundary. The slope is gentler than Les Rugiens, and the soils less iron-rich — which shapes a different kind of wine. Where Les Rugiens reaches for grip and spice, Les Grands Épenots delivers classical Pommard weight tempered by a richer fruit profile and softer contours. Firm tannins and a long ageing arc remain, but the wines carry more generosity in their youth.
Grape variety is Pinot Noir throughout. Wines fall under the standard Burgundy premier cru framework.
Notable Producers
Domaine du Comte Armand (Clos des Épeneaux) has farmed the 5.23 ha walled parcel as a monopole since 1828 — today under biodynamic management. The estate produces the Clos des Épeneaux as a single-vineyard bottling; it is the reference wine for the climat.
Domaine de Courcel is a family estate with a significant parcel here, known for a whole-cluster approach that has become the benchmark modern interpretation of the vineyard.
Domaine de Montille brings parcels in Pommard to complement the estate's Volnay holdings.
Domaine Michel Gaunoux maintains the traditional Pommard house style.
Domaine Parent is among the historic names in the village with long-standing tenure in Les Grands Épenots.
Domaine Billard-Gonnet and Domaine Aleth Girardin also hold parcels in the climat.
