Domaine Henri Gouges
Profile

6History
Domaine Henri Gouges is the Nuits-Saint-Georges reference — the estate that first proved the village could produce wines worth aging and debating. Henri Gouges founded the domaine in the 1920s and became one of Burgundy's earliest advocates of domaine bottling, a stance that was genuinely radical when the négociant trade controlled most of what left the Côte de Nuits. His conviction that Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Crus deserved the same serious treatment as the grands crus of Vosne-Romanée or Gevrey-Chambertin shaped the estate's character — and, indirectly, Nuits-Saint-Georges's reputation as a whole. Successive generations of the Gouges family have maintained that identity without dramatic reinvention.
The domaine also holds a curiosity: a white wine from a Pinot Noir mutation — a plot within Les St-Georges where the vine produces white grapes rather than red. La Perrière blanc, made from this Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris variant, is bottled as a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru white and has no obvious equivalent anywhere in Burgundy.
Winemaking Approach
Six Premier Cru parcels, all but one in Nuits-Saint-Georges, anchor the portfolio. Les Porrets-St-Georges (3.50 ha) is the largest; Les St-Georges (1.08 ha) and Les Vaucrains (0.98 ha) carry the most prestige — both widely treated as Nuits-Saint-Georges's strongest candidates for Grand Cru elevation, a discussion that surfaces in every serious comparison of the appellation. Les Pruliers (1.88 ha) rounds out the core lineup.
The style is classical: whole-cluster fermentation in varying proportions, extended maceration, aging in oak with modest new-wood levels. The wines are built for the medium to long term — firm tannins in youth, but the structure resolves with time into something Nuits-Saint-Georges does better than almost anywhere else on the Côte.
