History

Clos du Cellier aux Moines translates literally as "the monks' cellar enclosure," and the name is accurate: Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Cîteaux cultivated vines here during the medieval period, using the site to supply their table and trade. Givry, the main red-wine commune of the Côte Chalonnaise, carried a reputation at the French royal court for centuries — Henri IV reportedly preferred its wines — and the cellier parcels were among the commune's most productive. After the Revolution, the monastic holdings passed into private hands and eventually fractured among multiple owners.
