Romanée-Saint-Vivant takes its name from the medieval Abbey of Saint-Vivant, which once held several of the present-day Vosne-Romanée grands crus. When the Revolution stripped the abbey of its possessions in 1791, Nicolas-Joseph Marey acquired the entire vineyard. Over the following century the property was gradually subdivided — parcels passed to the Latour family in 1898 and to Charles Noellat, and the site has remained in multiple ownership ever since.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased the Marey-Monge parcel from 1966 and purchased it outright in 1988. The AOC was created in 1936.
Style & Terroir
Romanée-Saint-Vivant lies entirely within Vosne-Romanée, bordered by La Grande Rue, Romanée-Conti, and Richebourg. Production area stood at 9.30 ha in 2008 — one of the larger grands crus in the Vosne cluster. Regulations mirror the other Vosne grands crus: Pinot Noir as the principal variety, minimum 9,000 vines per hectare, 11.5% minimum potential alcohol, and a ceiling of 35 hl/ha. Total production in 2008 was around 237 hl, just under 32,000 bottles.
Its lower-slope position shapes a consistently graceful, refined character — less immediately imposing than Richebourg or Romanée-Conti, but built on finely drawn aromatics and silky texture. Among the Vosne grands crus it tends toward the most ethereal end of the spectrum.
Notable Producers
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest owner, farming 5.28 ha — the former Marey-Monge parcel, leased from 1966 and purchased in 1988. Romanée-Saint-Vivant ranks among DRC's larger grand cru holdings by area.
Domaine Leroy produces a very small biodynamic cuvée from its parcel.
Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat inherited one of the historical Charles Noellat parcels and remains a reference house for the vineyard.
Several other leading Vosne-Romanée domaines work parcels descended from the Latour and Marey lineages.
