History

The earliest documented record of La Tâche dates to 1631, when the de Croonembourg family acquired the plot from the Abbey of Saint-Vivant. The name — *tâche* means "task" or "patch of work" — appears to date from that same period. When the family sold its Vosne holdings in 1760, the adjacent Romanée passed to the Prince of Conti while La Tâche remained in separate hands, then ranked among the finest commercially available wines of the village.

The Marey family took over in 1791. The estate was sequestered during the Revolution and auctioned off in 1793–1794. Jules Lavalle's 1855 classification ranked La Tâche as *tête de cuvée* — the top tier. The decisive change came in 1932–1933, when the bulk of the neighbouring Les Gaudichots was absorbed into La Tâche and the Liger-Belair holdings were auctioned to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. La Tâche has been a DRC monopole since 1933. The AOC was created in 1936.

Style & Terroir

La Tâche is a 5.03 ha grand cru in Vosne-Romanée — a long south-facing strip bordered by La Grande Rue to the north and by premier cru parcels on its other sides, mirroring much of the exposure of Romanée-Conti itself. The regulatory allowance of up to 15% Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Gris is not used; the wine is Pinot Noir only.

At roughly 20,000 bottles annually (five-year average 2003–2007: approximately 151 hl), La Tâche is the larger of DRC's two flagship monopoles in production terms. Viticulture follows the same protocol as Romanée-Conti: fully organic since 1985, biodynamic on selected parcels, yields around 25 hl/ha, whole-berry sorting, no compromise on fruit selection. The character leans more generous than Romanée-Conti — more overt fruit and perfume on release — while retaining the architecture for very long ageing.

Notable Producers

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has been the sole owner since 1933. The present 5.03 ha footprint took shape after the court cases and auction that folded Les Gaudichots into La Tâche. DRC farms it under the same philosophy applied across all its grands crus: fully organic, horse-drawn cultivation where possible, green harvesting, rigorous hand sorting. La Tâche sits alongside Romanée-Conti as one of the two wines that define the domaine — the more opulently expressive of the pair, and one of the most sought-after bottles in Burgundy.
