ラ・ロマネ

La Romanée was originally six separate parcels known collectively as *Aux Echanges*. Between 1815 and 1826, General Louis Liger-Belair consolidated them into a single holding; in 1827 the unified plot was registered under the name "La Romanée." The Liger-Belair family has owned it uninterrupted ever since — more than two centuries of continuous possession. The AOC was created in 1936.
At 0.845 hectares, La Romanée is the smallest grand cru in Burgundy and the smallest AOC of any category in all of France.
La Romanée sits at the core of the Vosne-Romanée grand cru cluster — Romanée-Conti immediately downslope to the east, Aux Reignots (premier cru) upslope to the west, La Grande Rue to the south, Richebourg to the north. The soils are rendzina over Prémeaux limestone, capped with brown calcareous earth: a fine sand-clay mixture with pebbles over friable limestone. That substrate gives the wine both depth and a silken texture often missing in larger sites.
Pinot Noir only. The wine combines power and delicacy — fine tannins, a long finish, aromatics of cherry, dark berry, and spice that shift with age toward preserved fruit and leather. Annual production from 0.845 ha ran to roughly 3,700 bottles in 2008, making allocation essentially impossible for all but the most established buyers.
Comte Liger-Belair is the monopole owner of La Romanée. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair assumed day-to-day management in 1991, and the wines have tracked upward in quality and international attention since. Fewer than 4,000 bottles per year across the entire appellation — La Romanée is among the hardest Burgundy grands crus to obtain, even for buyers with long-standing relationships.
